Victorian road rule 130 requires drivers to keep left unless overtaking on roads with speed zones higher than 80km/h or where a 'Keep Left Unless Overtaking' sign is shown.
There are some exceptions to this rule, including the following:
- You are overtaking another vehicle
- Avoiding an obstruction
- Preparing to make a right-hand turn
- The left lane is congested with traffic
- The left lane is a slow vehicle lane
- If a 'left sign must turn left' sign applies to the lane
- The left lane is a special vehicle lane, such as a bus lane
This video gives an overview of when the 'keep left unless overtaking' rule does and doesn't apply.
